Franco-Tamil heritage dining inside a 130-year-old Chettiar mansion in the Tamil Quarter. The karivepillai varutha meen is among the best fish dishes in the city.
Maison Perumal operates from a 130-year-old Chettiar mansion in the Tamil Quarter, its courtyard shaded and its dining room cooled by the thick walls of the original building. The cuisine is Franco-Tamil: dishes rooted in the cooking of Pondicherry's renonçant community, the Franco-Indian Catholic families who inhabited the space between French and Tamil culture for two centuries.
The vazhapoo vadai (banana flower patties) is a quietly extraordinary starter: a dish that looks simple and tastes like careful tradition. The karivepillai varutha meen, fish fried with curry leaf, is precise and fragrant. The kothamalli meen porichathu (coriander fish fry) is another standout.
Courtyard seating is recommended when available. The heritage setting and the quality of the cooking make this one of the most complete dining experiences in Pondicherry.
