Indian Coffee House
₹ Budget
A 1940s canteen that has not changed and does not intend to. Standing room only, filter coffee for 25 rupees, and a menu that shifts from dosa at breakfast to biryani at lunch.
Indian Coffee House belongs to a different era and that is precisely why it is worth visiting. The interior has the feel of a colonial-period canteen: tiled floors, ceiling fans, a counter for ordering, and no concessions to ambiance. Time has stood still here, deliberately.
The menu changes through the day. Mornings bring dosa, idly, and vada. By afternoon it shifts to biryani, uttapam, and omelettes. The filter coffee is spiced, sweet, and strong, served in a steel tumbler, and costs around 25 rupees. A samosa is about 10.
This is not a tourist destination in the conventional sense. It is where Pondicherry residents eat. That is what makes it worth knowing about.
