Bastille Day

July 14 each year

France's national day is celebrated in Pondicherry with wreath-laying at the French War Memorial, both national anthems at the Consulate General, a torchlight parade through the White Town, and fireworks over the Promenade.

The morning

Bastille Day begins at the French War Memorial on Goubert Avenue. French government officials, the Consul General, local dignitaries, and veterans gather to lay wreaths and pay tribute to the soldiers from this region who died in the First World War. The memorial is maintained by the French Consulate and tended year-round. The wreath-laying is formal, brief, and genuinely felt.

The Consulate and the anthems

Inside the Consulate General of France, both the Marseillaise and Jana Gana Mana are played. One territory's national day, celebrated in a city that is now part of another country, by an institution that has remained here across seventy years of Indian sovereignty. The juxtaposition is entirely deliberate. Pondicherry's relationship with France did not end in 1954 or 1962; it continues, through the Consulate, through the Alliance Française, through the Lycée Français, and through the thousands of Franco-Tamil families with French citizenship.

The evening

As dusk falls, the White Town comes alive. French and French-influenced restaurants along Rue Dumas and Rue Suffren run special menus. The crowds move toward the Promenade for the fireworks, which illuminate the Consulate General building and the seafront. A torchlight procession with participants carrying red, white, and blue lanterns moves through the streets of the French Quarter. The event is open to everyone.

A practical note

July 14 in Pondicherry falls during the southwest monsoon season. Humidity is high and rain is possible. Carry something light for the weather. The fireworks are worth it.
